Fact – Californians Are Leaving: Along with companies interested in heading east are residents. Joel Kotkin, editor of NewGeography.com, said, “Nearly four million more people have left the Golden State in the last two decades than have come from other states. This is a sharp reversal from the 1980s, when 100,000 more Americans were settling in California each year than were leaving.” The Tax Foundation reports that in the last decade more people moved from California to Texas than vice versa.

If we had a Super Bowl to determine the most effective state government, the Lone Star state would crush the so-called Golden State. Coach Rick Perry would accept the Lombardi Trophy while players splashed Shiner Bock beer all over him. Coach Jerry Brown would say, “Well, we really won, but that scoreboard, run by declinists, is wrong.”

So, dear visitors from Texas, should California’s jingoists disparage you again, just ignore the cheap shots. After all, the facts are so very much on your side.

This is a glimpse into Obama’s future, the Left’s and the Progressives’ on the right side of the aisle. McCain, Graham, Boehner, Cantor and all the other faux Conservatives should begin packing their bags and looking for retirement venues.

California's slippery gun-control slide

There are moments when the only thing separating you and a criminal is your firearm.  Why in the world would want to handicap the innocent victim?

NEW: Californians fleeing to Nevada

Well, it's not THAT new to those who've read my blog.  But still...

Anecdotal, yes, but a news report indicates that warnings made during the Prop 30 campaign last year are playing out — higher taxes are sending some Californians across the state line to Nevada.

Under the headline, California Rich Seek Nevada Tax Haven, in the Tahoe Daily Tribune, the article says that Californians accounted for 43 percent of the 288 sales so far this year in Incline Village and Crystal Bay. More to the point, an Incline Village real estate broker reports that of the 39 sales on Nevada shores of Lake Tahoe to Californians since the beginning of the year, 15 buyers, forty percent of the total, specifically said they moved to Nevada to escape the Prop. 30 tax hikes.

Other brokers confirmed that there has been an increase in high-end housing sales that the reporter wrote was attributed to California residents’ “desire to get beyond the reach of the Golden State taxman.” Sales on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe were stronger than on the California side with a broker quoted as saying, “Prop. 30 probably has something to do with that.”

Some would argue the numbers reflected in the article are not significant. However, since the California tax system is built something like an upside down pyramid with the few at the bottom holding up the structure, a small but significant stream of high end taxpayers moving to low tax states could have consequences on California’s bottom line.

We are much less free than in 1975

As a young teenager, I used to love going to the Columbia Airport and going to a small outside visitor's section and watch the planes land and takeoff.  When my dad left for deployment in Vietnam we accompanied him to the terminal and hugged him before he walked onto the plane.  I really miss those days.
