In Fresno County, California, some hundreds of workers have walked away from their jobs at Gerawan Farming in protest at the United Farm Workers, a union that the workers have been forced to join by the state of California. The union has attempted to seize some three percent of each worker’s paycheck based on a union vote two decades ago. The union has been completely inactive at Gerawan Farming since it was established. Workers at Gerawan make $10 per hour and receive health benefits. That is significantly higher than industry standard, and the union simply wants employee cash based on negotiations that never involved the union. “They’re not asking us if we want it or not, they’re forcing us to have a union and we don’t want that,” said Silvia Lopez, one of the employees. “We have a right to vote to choose.”

Wired obtained some of the draft lesson plans. They're amazing (and not in a complimentary way). The lesson aimed at second graders (pdf), for example, winds up this way:

We are all creators at some level. We hope others will respect our work and follow what we decide to allow with our photos, art, movies, etc. And we 'play fair' with their work too. We are careful to acknowledge the work of authors and creators and respect their ownership. We recognize that it's hard work to produce something, and we want to get paid for our work.

We're definitely all becoming creators, and we do want others to respect our work. But in the real world, and under the law, we can't make all the decisions about what uses we allow of that work. There's a concept called "fair use" – deliberately ignored in the lesson, on the absurd basis that kids can't understand it – that explicitly allows others to make use of our work in ways we don't like, or anticipate. Without fair use, creative works would be next to impossible, because we all build on the work of those who came before us.

SpaceX launches its largest rocket from California coast

SpaceX successfully launched its most powerful rocket Sunday, notching another milestone for the Hawthorne rocket maker.

The nine-engine Falcon 9, carrying a Canadian weather satellite, lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base shortly after 9 a.m.

It marked the first time that a rocket made by SpaceX launched from California. Until Sunday, SpaceX had launched its rockets from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

Vaccine refusal linked to California pertussis outbreak

Leftist Whackos have lost - or maybe never had -perspective with regard to whooping cough.  There was a time when the problem was so bad over half of a classroom would be empty due to the spread of the disease.

The 2010 California outbreak of the extremely contagious respiratory disease pertussis (also known as whooping cough) was the largest in more than 60 years. It resulted in 9,120 cases and 10 deaths -- a third of all the cases seen in the USA that year. Several causes of the outbreak have previously been documented, including waning immunity of the pertussis vaccine. A new analysis offers evidence that geographic areas with higher percentages of people who intentionally refused the vaccine is also associated with increased cases of the disease.

Obamacare -- the View from California

How the heck is Obamacare going to help provide healthcare to CA'ians?  It won't.

The Los Angeles Times wrote in May, "People who want UCLA Medical Center and its doctors in their health plan network next year, for instance, may have only one choice in California's exchange: Anthem Blue Cross. " But less than a month later Anthem Blue Cross pulled out of the California SHOP. Let's see, one minus one equals zero, right?

In the same article, Blue Shield admitted that its slimmed-down CoveredCA members would see only 37% of the doctors who make up Shield's regular, long-established network.

California to review toxic substances in consumer products

This is amazing.  The writer of the article thinks a HUGE GOVERNMENTAL BUREAUCRACY is better than passing laws.  Yet another agency that will run out of control causing wide spread angst.  Approval of new substances will take decades.  In the end, nothing will get done.  All of the available products already being sold will cost more.

But is that all that will happen?  Of course not!  We've been down this road before many times! Not only will new product innovation cease, people will be not only no safer, they will be LESS SAFE due to the bureaucratic bungling that always follows.

And as usual, agencies such as this will find themselves populated with agenda-driven employees.  Employee sport will be overpopulated by former Sierra Club and ELF members.

It doesn't take a genius to see where this is headed.  Just more CA completely out of control.

In the past, the state took a piecemeal approach. Lawmakers would ban specific chemicals from particular products, such as bisphenol A in baby bottles and sippy cups.

That's being replaced by a more systematic approach. Under the new rules, which go into effect Oct. 1, the state will identify classes of products for review, such as nail polish. Manufacturers will then have to perform detailed analyses to justify whether hazardous chemicals are needed or whether substitutes are available.

Yeah, right.  At some point, companies will just get fed up with the crap and by-pass CA altogether.
